The Weight Loss Journey of Paula

Why is fitness or being fit important to you?
Being Fit and staying Fit is important to me because my life depends on it. I want to live a long, healthy life and set a positive example to my children and everyone around me. Our children watch everything that we do and say and they also watch everything that we put in our mouths. I’d rather show my children how to make healthy  food  choices and exercise regularly, this will decrease generation illnesses and disease.

What or whom is the source of your motivation?
The source of my motivation comes from within, after being diagnosed with hypertension back in 2011, it really put me in perspective. I began to think about my life, my family, and if I really wanted to wake up every day remembering to take a hypertension pill. The answer for me was NO in all caps, lol! My Dr. looked me in the eye and told me that I would be on that same pill for the rest of my life and right at that moment I rejected what he said. I took the medicine but I also began the proper steps to lose the weight that I needed to lose in order to lower my blood pressure. I prayed daily because it was truly hard to break away from the foods that gave me comfort. I fell in love with my new lifestyle and I found interesting ways to eat without having to feel restricted and to prevent binging. This didn’t happen overnight, it takes time, a whole lot of patience, and most importantly…dedication to change.

What if anything has changed about your diet and/or eating habits?
I am definitely more conscious of what I put into my body. I am a label reader! If I can’t pronounce the ingredient than it’s more than likely not good for my temple. I love whole food stores, greenwise brands, herbs, fresh fruit and vegetables. Since my journey I eliminated beef and pork from my diet. Beef takes too long to process in the human body and pork is loaded with sodium so it just works for me to not eat it at all.

How has that change contributed to your weight loss?
Since the change, my doctor took me off of the hypertension pills because my pressure has been regulated and I no longer need a pill to stabilize it. I also have more energy to workout, more energy for my children and I just feel better overall. My knees used to ache badly when I was overweight, I mean it hurt to walk up the stairs but now I don’t have that problem.  I have also gained confidence knowing that I have accomplished my goal and changed my life for the better.

What has been your greatest challenge or hurdle during your weight loss journey?
My greatest hurdle during my journey initially was staying focused. I constantly reminded myself why I started the journey and why I needed to finish strong. Every day I had to battle with making the right choices because prior to, I was addicted to fried chicken, POPEYES was my best friend…that and Dunkin Donuts. I was a mess…but I was human and only I could fix the problem. I was in love with food…food that if consumed the way I was consuming, would eventually kill you. I could remember eating donuts by myself by the dozen, or 4-5 pieces of fried chicken with sides in one setting. I didn’t know it at the time but I was addicted to food, I lived to eat. I would think the day before about the oversized meals I wanted to indulge the next day. I know God didn’t want me to continue to destroy my temple and my family wanted me around for a long time so I had to let the bad habits go even though it was a great challenge for me…I did it.

Do you have any advice for others trying to lose weight?
My advice to others would be to be patient with your journey. You have to constantly affirm yourself and remind yourself the reason why you decided to embark on this new quest…. Be dedicated to your goals, make it apart of your everyday life and involve others that you trust to hold you accountable. Consistency is extremely important if you want to see change… It can be rough but it also can be done! Stay Strong…Stay Focused…Stay Fit…because your life depends on it…
