The Fitness Journey of Ruth


Why is fitness or being fit important to you?
Being fit is very important to me, because as a mother of four, I have realized that I need to be in good health and have energy to be able to not only take care of my children but to also feel good about myself.

What or whom is the source of your motivation?
Once I began to notice African American women gaining weight and having health problems, that's when I said to myself...this will not happen to me. I didn't want to be another statistic; I wanted to be a picture of good health and be able to help and motivate others. I realized that it comes from the inside out. My motivation? God who enabled me, then my husband, next my family, and finally my people.


What if anything has changed about your diet and/or eating habits?
When I started my journey, I was very unconscious about the ingredients in food. I thought that it was only about calories and carbs, but now I am aware of what I put into my precious body (temple). I am now becoming a full vegan and putting more raw food into my lifestyle. 

How has that change contributed to your overall health and wellness?
Once I began eating more raw food, my health has drastically changed for the better. I noticed that I have a lot more energy, I can operate very well on only 4 to 6 hours of sleep, I have a very strong immune system, I don't have a long menstrual cycle anymore, no more dandruff problems and that's just to name a few. 


What has been your greatest challenge or hurdle during your fitness journey?
My greatest hurdle is staying consistent. I am a homemaker and I homeschool my children plus I have taken in my 2 nieces(one of which is a baby). I have to maintain my online business as well. It's very hard to stay consistent and maintain a schedule.

Do you have any advice for others trying to become fit?
My advice to others is to never give up. Be around people who will motivate and push you. You may have to try different things until you find out what works for you. Be encouraged and feel good about even the smallest progress you make.
