Cleaning Your Hair Styling Tools

Hair brushes and combs need to be cleaned regularly. Like makeup brushes and toothbrushes they collect dust, and contain some amount of build up. The products you use on your hair gets collected in your brushes and combs. Baking soda will keep your styling tools free of natural oil build up and product residue plus it's an inexpensive cleaning agent.

How to Clean Your Hair Styling Tools:
  1. First you will need to remove all trapped hair.
  2. Fill your sink with warm water and add a teaspoon of baking soda. ( Let them soak for a few minutes)
  3. Swirl the tools around in the water to loosen dirt. (I use my fingers to gently loosen the dirt in between the bristles).
  4. Take your comb and pass it through the brush a few times to loosen any left over dirt missed or trapped hair.
  5. Rinse the brush and comb with warm water ( I use hot water on the last rinse)
  6. Tap off the excess water, and dry the handle and if you can hang the brush over the edge of the sink to make sure no moisture gets trapped in the base. (Place it upside down to allow water to drain  properly)
Tip: Make sure to periodically check your brush for any split bristles. These can catch on your hair and damage the strands. Broken comb bristles also can damage your strands.

True Story: I remember my last visit to the Beauty Salon, before I decided to go natural. I'd just got my hair washed and deep conditioned. As I was sitting the chair I looked around my Beauticians station and was appalled at the dirty styling tools she had lying around. I couldn't believe it! I was thinking to myself, I'm paying this woman good money to do my hair and she has the nerve to use dirty styling tools on my freshly washed hair. I didn't say anything, I just knew in my mind that would be my last visit.
